A Sweater, a Partner, 30 Doors

“AI has made starting a business easier than ever, but three things haven't changed: you still have to knock on the door yourself, you need a partner who will share the losses, and you need a reason you can give yourself.”

What I think about this today.
On 26 October I spoke to Management Information Systems students at TechKariyer’26, Düzce University, about 11 years. I didn’t memorise the talk; I built it with the Time Corridor: every door a year, every year an image.
The sweater
I didn’t start out for the money, I wanted to get married. My wife and I started selling jewellery with 100 lira each. I built the website myself in three months, but we didn’t have the money to set up a company. We found it when the Nirvana sweater my grandmother knitted sold on Etsy for 115 dollars.
Everyone has a sweater in their wardrobe. Sometimes it’s an idea, sometimes a connection, sometimes the people around you. You just have to see it. When you have no choice, you do.
The partner
At a dinner in 2018 my wife said, “You and Kemal could do this together.” Our first joint project, Patileme, failed. Our partnership is in its eighth year. Who you walk with matters more than where you arrive. You can’t grow without a partner.
30 doors
In 2019 Kemal and I went from lawyer to lawyer trying to sell websites. 29 doors said no, the thirtieth said yes. A no at one door means it’s time to knock on the next one.
The bill
We grew, and in 2024 went from 11 people down to the two of us. When you make a mistake in a startup you don’t only pay with money, you pay with time. For me that time was barely seeing my younger son at two and three. We paid off the debts with Digisapiens and AI.
Three things that haven’t changed
Someone walking the same road today could do in a few hours what took us 30 days. Starting a business has never been this easy. But three things haven’t changed, and maybe they matter more now:
- The door. Competition is higher; you’ll knock on 300 doors, not 30. AI can’t knock on doors and meet people for you.
- The partner. Someone who owns the failures, not just the wins.
- The reason. This road isn’t straight. Sometimes you’ll hit bottom, sometimes you’ll be applauded. Without a solid reason, you’ll fall apart.
I set out on this road to get married. What’s your reason?

AI has made starting a business easier than ever, but three things haven't changed: you still have to knock on the door yourself, you need a partner who will share the losses, and you need a reason you can give yourself.

Yapay zekâ girişimciliği hiç olmadığı kadar kolaylaştırdı ama üç şey değişmedi: kapı çalmak, ortak ve kendine verebildiğin bir neden.

- This idea extends I became a founder because I wanted to get married I didn't start out with a business idea. I started because I wanted to get married, and with 200 lira between us we had to learn everything we lacked by trial and error. Mature
- This idea extends My grandmother's sweater founded our company When you start with tiny capital and reinvest everything into product, there's nothing left to make the business official. Our company was founded by selling the Kurt Cobain sweater my grandmother knitted to a buyer in America. Mature
- This idea related Will AI take our jobs? Wrong question. The question is no longer "will AI take our jobs." The question is: what will we do together with AI? Mature
- This idea related The project I wouldn't pay 100 lira for: Digisapiens A year ago I pulled the plug on a project because 100 lira a month felt like too much, and today it is looking for its first 100 users: on paper we never went under, but in reality we sank and came back up. Mature
- This idea related The Time Corridor and the Idea Corridor Instead of memorizing a talk, tie each section to an image in a corridor and walk through it, and you'll speak naturally: for a lived story you order the doors by time, for an argument you order them by logic. Seed
- This idea supports You can't grow without a partner What holds a partnership together is not the wins you share but your willingness to risk losing together. Once you succeed, partners are easy to find. The hard part is having someone you can share failure with. Mature
- This idea supports 29 doors didn't know us at all Work usually comes not from the people closest to you but from someone you met once. Code got cheap, but AI can't build those weak ties for you. For that, you still have to get up and go to the door. Testing
