SaaS isn't dying, it's changing shape

What I think about this today.
One person, seven programs
In October 2026 Brandon Thomas, a developer with 15 years of experience, built counterparts to 7 Adobe programs with AI (Claude) and released them as open source. His announcement had one line: software is over. Today the number of apps has grown to 13.
The first reviews aren’t great. For the professional video tools people say “it’s not even a tenth of After Effects or Premiere.” But the point isn’t matching that quality. The point is that one person had the nerve to try it alone and actually ship something.
My Adobe bill
For years I used a whole bunch of Adobe programs. I’m not a graphic designer, I’m not a videographer, but I had to use After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator. For the last 2-3 years I wasn’t using them at all, but I kept paying every month. I quit. Cancelling came with a penalty too. That’s why a lawsuit was filed in the US, and in March 2026 Adobe agreed to a 150 million dollar settlement.
Recently I tried a free program called RevPDF instead of Acrobat. It did everything Acrobat did for me.
Kemal’s Trello example
I talked it over with Kemal. We could write Trello ourselves, the basic features might take us a week. But we pay 18-20 dollars a month and don’t write it. There’s the opportunity cost, and there’s the question of whether you take on the technical load yourself or hand it to someone else.
For a big company it’s even harder. Getting that many people onto a new program, teaching them, and knowing who to hold accountable when something breaks. A big company doesn’t buy the program. It buys a promise that the program will still be supported tomorrow.
Then there’s habit. Leaving software is easy, leaving a habit is really hard.
The other side of the table
I run a software agency, I sell software too. People used to have to work with us just to try the smallest thing. Not anymore. They build it themselves first, test it, and knock on our door depending on the reaction. That’s why we changed our model: not project by project, but taking over and running the process as their software team.
What happens to founders?
Your software used to protect you from competitors. Now we’ve seen that any software can be copied. I think the most important thing for founders will be to move with a community, and knowing software can be copied, to sell trust and sustainability.
Maybe the revenue model will change too. You’ll buy the software once, at a fair price. You’ll pay a subscription for support and new versions.
I didn’t hesitate for a second when I left Adobe. But I can’t apply that directly even in my own company. Because the point isn’t only the software itself, it’s the guarantee that it will still be there tomorrow.
Open questions
- If copying is this easy, what should one-time software cost?
- Can a community be a strong enough promise that software will still be there tomorrow?
