## Thesis

Viewers who pay to flip a streamer upside down are buying the feeling of control, but none of them are actually in control.

## Summary

On a livestream in China, anyone who sends 50 yuan (about $7.50) can flip the streamer's chair upside down. The streamer doesn't even say thanks: money comes in, the chair turns.

It reminded me of three things:
- **Marina Abramović, Rhythm 0 (1974):** 72 objects, 6 hours, "do whatever you want to me." The audience started with a rose and ended with a gun.
- **Black Mirror, Common People:** Mike humiliates himself a little more every day to keep his wife alive, and pays for the shame with his own face.
- **The Matrix:** The battery in Morpheus's hand. A person feeding the system while believing they're free.

People send money out of a desire for control: someone who has no say over their boss, their spouse or their own life can flip a human being upside down for $7.50. But the streamer set the price, the streamer had the chair built, and the platform takes the commission. As limits disappear we don't get happier. We get more dissatisfied and lonelier, because humans are beings who can only be happy within limits.
